Three Decades of Strategic Evolution
Core Benefits Insurance Services was founded in 1989 by Timothy "TJ" Johnson under the original name The Johnson Group. In 2004, the firm rebranded and formally incorporated as Core Benefits Insurance Services — reflecting a broader strategic vision: to evolve beyond brokerage into a multidisciplinary employee benefits consulting firm.
Today, Core Benefits operates as a strategic consulting partner for mid-market employers seeking long-term cost control, transparency, and a genuine advisory relationship. We bring innovation, discipline, and modern systems thinking to an industry that too often relies on outdated models and reactive service.

Timothy “TJ” Johnson
Founder & Managing Principal
TJ Johnson has spent more than three decades advising business leaders on employee benefits strategy, healthcare cost management, PEO evaluation, and human capital infrastructure.
He founded Core Benefits with a conviction that mid-market employers deserve the same caliber of strategic guidance typically reserved for large corporations — delivered with the personal attention that only an independent firm can provide.
TJ holds the Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) designation — a nationally recognized credential reflecting advanced expertise in health and benefits planning.
Outside of client work, TJ is an active thought leader on LinkedIn, where he publishes regularly on healthcare cost strategy, self-funding, PEO evaluation, and human capital management for growth-focused employers.
